"Sometimes, when you look Andy in the eyes, you get a feeling somebody else is driving."

"I am not a comic, I have never told a joke. I don't even watch comedians. The comedian's promise is that he will go out there and make you laugh with him. I've never done that in my life. My only promise is that I will try to entertain you as best I can. I can manipulate people's reactions. There are different kinds of laughter. Gut laughter is where you don't have a choice, you've got to laugh. Gut laughter doesn't come from the intellect. And it's much harder for me to evoke now, because I'm known. They say, 'Oh wow, Andy Kaufman, he's a really funny guy.' But I'm not trying to be funny. I just want to play with their heads."-Andy Kaufman

Andy Kaufman. Performer, wrestler, singer, dancer, and entertainer. Perhaps you've heard of him, with the recent release of Man on the Moon starring Jim Carrey as Andy. Maybe you remember him from Taxi, as he played Latka Gravas, the foreign mechanic. Perhaps you haven't heard of him at all. If you haven't, why are you here? GO AWAY! No, no, I am only fooling.

This website is meant as a tribute to Andy, not to try and make sense out of him. But to remember him for the great genius of a man he was. Kaufman was a "song and dance man" as he referred to himself. He didn't go out and tell jokes, but instead performed. He sang songs, played records, and did his "Foreign Man" routine. Some laughed, some hated him. But Andy loved both. His goal was not to make the audience laugh, but to simple get any reaction, of any sort. Love him, hate him, he was happy either way.

I am only 15 years old. But I am a huge fan of Andy's, and I remember seeing him on Comedy Central for the first time, doing his "Mighty Mouse Theme" routine on Saturday Night Live. I was very small at the time, but I loved it, it was hilarious. Why? I don't know, he was just lip-synching "Here I come to save the day!". Maybe because he was a unique person, and the way he did it is what was funny. His silent gestures, and his exuberance when he flung his arm in the air and sang. I had never seen anything like it, and I still haven't seen anyone like him. And I think no one ever will.
